Washington, D.C.— Today, in their ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, leaving abortion access up to individual states. The Court’s ruling goes against decades of legal precedent and devastates reproductive protections including abortion access to satisfy draconian reproductive laws and right-wing extremist opinions.
There are already 13 states with trigger ban laws that will go into effect immediately with 13 others soon to follow. In these 26 states like Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, and more, Republican-led state legislatures have already moved to limit access.
In a concurring opinion, Justice Thomas set the stage for the Court to overrule other cases, including protections for contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.
Greisa Martinez Rosas, Executive Director of United We Dream Action, said:
“Let us be clear – abortion is our human right and a necessary component to our freedom and self determination. We won’t go back! Today’s ruling from the stolen Supreme Court is an injustice for millions of people, which will have lasting repercussions. It will have an especially devastating impact on immigrant women, trans men, and non-binary people seeking abortion care who because of their immigration status might fear traveling long distances, or would otherwise have to go through Customs and Border Protection (CBP) checkpoints. No one should have to fear seeking access to the health care they need. No one should lose their life because they are unable to access basic health care, like abortion.Republicans and the religious right have been building towards this moment for decades. The forces working against us are not shy about their goal to control our bodies, deny us health care, and take away our freedom to marry. Our democracy is under attack, our right to a nationally protected legal abortion has been overturned, millions of immigrants remain undocumented and at risk for deportation. This is why a broad multi-racial coalition organized at the height of a deadly pandemic to deliver Democrats all the power. President Biden and Democrats in Congress must be bold and unapologetic in their response to this moment and in protecting our communities. They must start right now by abolishing the filibuster and passing legislation codifying and expanding the right to an abortion.”
