Washington, D.C. – Today marks two years since the Trump administration’s decision to end the DACA program. Immigrant youth and allies lept into action, which has kept DACA renewals in place. In the coming months, the Supreme Court will take up the case, with a final ruling coming out between January-June 2020. While Trump has tried to use DACA recipients to fund his racist border wall and increase funding for his mass deportation agenda, immigrant youth call on presidential candidates to help us chart a new path forward.
Adrian Reyna, Strategy Director, of United We Dream Action, said:
“Two years ago on this day, Trump ended the DACA program as we know it and sought to strike fear in our communities by sending a message to the country that immigrants are undeserving of the freedom to thrive and the right to call this country home. But we organized and fought back: we have preserved DACA renewals and continued to expose the brutality of Trump’s deportation force.
With the Supreme Court case right around the corner, beginning November 12, we urge the presidential candidates to denounce and reject Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies and adopt our Free To Move, Free To Stay platform. We call on them to chart a new path forward and create a country where we’re helping people without hurting people. A path forward which goes beyond just protections for DACA recipients and includes the millions of undocumented people currently living the U.S.
Let’s be clear: Trump’s vision for America does not include immigrants, refugees, or people of color. And time and time again, Trump and Republicans have tried to use DACA recipients as a bargaining chip. They have been relentless in demanding more and more money for the Deportation Force, while blocking legislative protections like the Dream and Promise Act.
DACA’s future remains uncertain in the Supreme Court, which is why we need the next president of the United States to enact bold, broad policies to protect more people without harming others.”
