Washington, DC – Today, presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) announced he will end his presidential campaign. Back in February, United We Dream Action proudly endorsed Senators Sanders and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
Cristina Jimenez, Executive Director of United We Dream Action, issued the following statement:
“We thank Senator Bernie Sanders for his unwavering commitment to progressive values and a vision of justice and dignity for all people. United We Dream Action endorsed both Senators Sanders and Warren earlier this year because both candidates committed to our Free To Move, Free To Stay platform for immigrant justice.
Election results clearly showed that Senator Sanders energized young and Latinx voters because of his bold vision for our country, including his immigration platform, and commitments for medicare for all, climate change, and tuition free college. He also committed to shutting down for-profit detention camps right away, shrinking the budgets for ICE & CBP, stopping and reviewing deportations in the first 100 days, issuing executive orders to protect immigrants, dismantling the racist enforcement machine, and supporting legislation that provides a pathway to citizenship without provisions to hurt other immigrants.
This election is not about any one candidate. This election is about our community.
We need young people, immigrants, and people of color to ensure we stop four more years of Trump policies. Policies which are killing our people, whether it’s in detention camps or by neglecting poor, working class communities of color in the response to the COVID-19 global health crisis. Immigrant youth and families of United We Dream Action are steadfast in our commitment to building an independent political movement to win justice for all people. ”
