Washington, D.C. – After over two years since the cruel and evil Title 42 policy was put in place by the Trump administration, President Biden is expected to make an announcement regarding the future of the policy with recent reporting suggesting an end to the policy in late May.
Juanita Monsalve, Senior Creative and Marketing Director of United We Dream Action, said:
“For over two years, Title 42 has led to evils like the expulsion of approximately 1.7 million people seeking asylum, the majority of them Black immigrants. This is over a million people who have been sent back to face persecution, climate disasters, lack of access to water and food, and sometimes even death.
Right now, Republicans are trying to sow fear, distrust, and division by lying to the public about our country’s ability to ensure people fleeing economic instability, political strife, climate change, and overall uncertainty, have a right to seek asylum. We see right through their lies and disinformation. People who are immigrants and refugees contribute greatly to the safety and well-being of our communities all across the country. They help make us the country we are, and while some politicians are trying to use fear-mongering to keep an evil policy like Title 42 in place, we must demand that our policymakers treat people seeking asylum with utmost dignity, humanity, and respect. We have all the resources to be able to do so.
For Democrats who have touted their commitment to racial justice, this is the time to act! This is the moment to reject Republicans trying to divide us, and instead stand with Black and brown communities and demand President Biden end the evils of Title 42 now!”
